HEIGHT
This series of work made from clay looks at the representation of myself through an abstract lens. To create the work I roll out a lump of clay until it reaches 154cm long, as long as I am tall. The piece is then picked up and held vertically so the bottom is touching the floor and the top is held at the top of my head, I then drop the clay letting it fall to the floor into a pile, this is then left to dry until it is ready for the kiln.
The representation of the self in this body of work speaks about the fragility of the body, throughout the making of these works I came across many opportunities for the work to break or smash, therefore few pieces make it through all the processes and even once finished they have to be handled carefully to avoid breakage. This is an important element of the work and it speaks about the weaknesses of my own body. The preciousness of the work is a point of exploration throughout my practice in ceramics and its interaction and juxtaposition with my metalwork. The lack of identifiable features in the work leaves it open to interpretation from the audience which I believe is crucial for my practice and those viewing it.
